Apparently used because they were quieter as they didn't 'ring' when in motion like lots of iron wheels of the period did and weren't prone to weak points like cast wheels could be. When the teak became loose in the wheel the wood was sometimes reused to make wooden cobbles, which were quieter than stone ones and were used at some stations.
