Queensbury Railway Tunnel

Quick look around in the rain at the former Great Northern Railway station at Queensbury which had lines to Keighley, Bradford Exchange and Halifax. It was an unusual triangular layout, the only other two at the time it was open were Ambergate and Earlestown. There is a campaign to reopen Queensbury tunnel just past the station as a cycleway, if that fails it is due to be filled in. Ten people died during the tunnel construction. #queensburystation #queensburytunnel #greatnorthernrailway

Cellars in ruined Milner Field

Exploring the cellars in the ruins of the 'cursed' Victorian Gothic Milner Field home of Titus Salt Jr (son of the founder of Saltaire). The house was built in the 1870s and demolished in the 1950s after falling into disrepair following the premature deaths of several residents and lain empty for over twenty years.

Azuma, Leeds

New LNER Azuma train at Leeds. I thought this wasn't due in service for another month or so, may have been a test run. Looks nice enough, but the mess of cables between coaches reminds me of Predator for some reason; why so high up? Azuma means East apparently. #azumatrain #lner

New Poundland Twin Peaks bar

Poundland have relaunched their Twin Peaks bar - in its new Toblerone patent friendly design. The small peak is the Ercall and the big peak is the Wrekin - home to Shropshire's TV transmitter! The Wrekin got its name from the old English name for Wroxeter - Wreocan or Wreocansǣtan, nearby. One suggestion for the origin of Wreocan is that it was from Uirocu - man-hound/werewolf. The Roman town of Viriconion Cornoviorum (possibly meaning place of werewolves where the Cornovii tribe live..) latinised the Old English name Wreocan to get its name. It was the fourth largest town in Britain at one time. It is hard to break the bar to get only one peak. #twinpeaksbar #thewrekin #toblerone #viriconium #werewolves

Cinerama 3-strip film at National Science and Media Museum

I watched How the West Was Won (1962) today shown using the original three-strip Cinerama system. Cinerama used three 35mm cameras mounted side-by-side to film (hence the joins) and three projectors to display the movie on a heavily curved screen (146°). This was the last movie filmed with the orginal cumbersome and expensive format, although further 'Cinerama' movies were made and shown into the early '70s but they were filmed and projected using simpler single 70mm camera and projector systems using anamorphic lenses. There are only a handful of cinemas remaining in the world which can show three panel Cinerama films.

Wooden Train Carriage Wheels

Wooden wheels on old train carriage. Apparently used because they were quieter as they didn't 'ring' when in motion like lots of iron wheels of the period did and weren't prone to weak points like cast wheels could be. When the teak became loose in the wheel the wood was sometimes reused to make wooden cobbles, which were quieter than stone ones and were used at some stations.

Space Invaders! Note that it is black and white with colour provided by filters across sections of the screen. The screen was flat horizontal and made vertical with a mirror.
