Pope Gregory IV officially declared that the Feast of All Saints Day was to be celebrated by the whole Church on November 1st in 837. . This is the cave of Saint Robert, a hermit who lived by by the River Nidd in Knaresborough. A small chapel and other buildings were built outside the cave (paid for by his brother, the mayor of York), the footprint of which can still be seen. He was famed across Europe and visited by King John in his cave; after his death his shrine became a major pilgrimage centre. .
