O2 arena and cable car at night, Greenwich

View this post on Instagram

The Millennium Dome/O2 Arena seen from the Emirates Air Line cable car. 🚠 Boris Johnson was a driving force behind the cable car, which ended up costing over twice the original budget, TfL made up some of the shortfall by obtaining a £10 million grant from the EU 🙄 Tony Blair's government greatly increased the scope of the new millennium celebration from John Major's original plans for something along the lines of the Festival of Britain. It suffered cost overruns and struggled with the tight opening schedule. The dome creates one of the largest indoor spaces in the world. 🎪 During the Olympic Games the dome was renamed the North Greenwich Arena and several events were held inside, other events were held in ExCeL London which could be reached using the cable car (which had opened shortly before) 🏅 The Emirates Air Line has failed to attract commuters (it's original intended market, hence TfL's involvement) or tourists and it's future is uncertain past 2021 when the Emirates sponsorship deal expires. 🚡 Sadly new buildings in recent years have partially obscured views of the dome ☹️ . #theo2 #o2arena #milleniumdome #milleniumexperience #london2012 #londonolympics #2012olympics #emiratesairlinecablecar #cablecar #gondola #nightphotography #londonatnight #london #borisjohnson #erdf #europeanregionaldevelopmentfund #northgreenwich #greenwichpeninsular
