Join me on my merry trek of old ruins, cinemas, railways and things that just catch my attention around Yorkshire and the UK. John.
View this post on Instagram The Cononley Lead Mine smelt mill flue which took the fumes away from the valley bottom. The flue was built around 150 years ago and was extended few years later by making use of the old Joy's mine adit and air-shaft to reach the hilltop where a new chimney was built. The adit is now used as a water supply so a small dam has been installed. You can walk through the final section of the flue (in good condition) to come out inside the restored chimney. Apparently in the past the hilltop was used for local gatherings because the area around the chimney was open and bare where nothing would grow... First pic is the chimney and the middle section of flue around the old adit, second pic is bottom (steep!) section, and third is top section and inside chimney. #cononleyleadmines #abandonedplaces #abandonedmine #mineexploration #industrialdecay #leadmine #miningheritage #mineexploring #mines #mininghistory #mining #mineadit #industrialheritage #underground #chimney A post shared by John | Exploration and history (@merrytrek) on Mar 20, 2019 at 9:27am PDT
