Snow fences, Dent

View this post on Instagram

Snow fences on bleak and gloomy early morning around Blea Moor, the wind was whistling when we stopped at Dent with rain clattering at the windows (the sun did come out when we reached the Eden valley ⛅). . The fences which seem to stretch for a couple of miles along the side of the track, made of old railway sleepers are now rotting and abandoned; is snow less of a problem now, or were they not very effective preventing snow drifts on the line? Landslides seem to be the major cause of problems nowadays. . This is around the high point of a 16 mile long climb from Settle which at around a 1/100 was about as steep as they could build the line and still run fast express trains on it. . Dent Station, the highest station in England at 1150ft reopened in 1986 after closing in 1970. For comparison the summit station on Snowdon is 3,493, and the highest in Europe at 11,332ft Jungfraujoch near the Eiger (that line is mainly in a tunnel due to the extreme weather). . Princetown station on Dartmoor was slightly higher than Dent at 1,430ft, but was on a branch line that closed in 1956. . For completeness the highest station in Scotland is Courror on Rannoch Moor at 1,340ft, and the highest in the world is Tanggula in Tibet at 16,627 feet above sea level. #dentstation #settlecarlislerailway #bleamoor #snowfence #midlandrailway
